FoRP - What we do ...

We keep a watchful eye on what is happening in the Park and on the Council’s plans for the Park and its buildings. For example, we played a large part in defending The Mansion against it becoming Council offices. We are glad that Dine, the new Tenant has restored The Mansion to its former splendour and wish them well with the Café/Restaurant and Function Venue opened in the Summer of 2009.

A very visible, active and friendly element of FoRP are our Working Parties under the direction of Jon Vogler. They take place on the second Saturday of every month, meeting in the Mansion car park, or as advised, at 10am. There is also a Friends’ Garden Maintenance Group who meet on occasional Tuesday mornings. Register to be on our email circulation list so as not to miss out! Just send your email address to jon@vogler.demon.co.uk

In the early days, activities centered on improving the appearance of the Park by litter picking, provision of litter bins, restoration of paths and steps etc - details can be found in early Newsletters.

Subsequently, FoRP became more ambitious. Building upon a good relationship with the Park Staff, we developed The Friends’ Garden and, in association with the Leeds Geological Association, The Geology Trail. For some time now, we have been working to improve The Ravine amongst other projects, including the funding of a wildflower area. Setting up and managing The Lester Library is yet another success.

These projects continue a tradition of investing directly into improvements and conservation projects within the Park and individual FoRP members can still be seen around the Park, with plastic bags, litter-picking.

We have an annual bulb planting programme and like to involve the young as well as their parents on these occasions eg 10,000 English Bluebells (not the Spanish interlopers) in the triangle of grass where the road meets the Carriage Drive opposite the boathouse. Daffodils and other bulbs have also been planted around the top lake, at the entrance to The Ravine and also in areas adjoining Wetherby Road.

The list of activities is endless and to find out more about current plans, do read our latest Newsletter.
